Silver Anti-Tarnish Finishes
We get frequent questions about what an anti-tarnish finish is for Sterling Silver. As many of you know, Sterling Silver will tarnish over time with exposure to skin and other elements. You can clean Sterling Silver items, but it does take time as well as the proper cleaning materials.
To get around that hassle, two common anti-tarnish finishes for silver are rhodium and Fine Silver. Rhodium is a hard, silvery white metal related to the platinum group that doesn’t tarnish and is very durable but also quite expensive.
Fine Silver also doesn’t tarnish, and it’s much more affordable, but it’s soft so it typically requires an additional anti-tarnish coating. In both cases, because the coating is made from a metal that doesn’t tarnish, silver that has been plated with either rhodium or Fine Silver will remain bright and shiny until the plating wears off. We sell a variety of Sterling Silver Beads at abeadstore.com as well as ChoiceJewelrySupplies.com that have a surface plating of Fine Silver.
The cost is a bit higher, but for many artisans, well worth it!
